Types of Cataract

  • Senile cataract
    Majority of cataract are senile cataract. It is due to degeneration processes in aging and it happens in every human being.

 

  • Congenital Cataract
    Congenital cataract occurs in newborn. It can occur in normal or abnormal children with congenital disorder or metabolic disorders. Eg. Down syndrome baby is known to have congenital cataracts.

 

  • Traumatic Cataract
    Cataract can develop after eye injury either in closed or open eye injury. It usually has special pattent as the opacity of lens develops at the contact points of injury. Cataract surgery secondary to trauma is technically more challenging because there is usually associated damage on the iris, lens zonules or cornea that would complicate the surgery.

 

  • Cataract secondary to Drugs
    The use of oral or topical steroids is a common cause of drug-induced cataract.

 

  • Cataract secondary to Metabolic Disesases
    Diabetics in particular have 3-4 times higher chance of having cataract compared with the normal population.

Risk Factors for Cataract:

  • Age

  • malnutrition

  • ultraviolet radiation

  • smoking

  • eye injury

  • Inflammatory eye diseases eg.chronic uveitis

  • high alcohol intake

  • metabolic diseases like Diabetes, hypertension
